What Is Coaching?

By Jonathon Vogel

I consider myself a freedom specialist who uses the coaching skill to help people in crisis make a plan to get focused and find freedom.

I have worked with hundreds of professionals, coaching them to breakthroughs, successes, and levels of clarity they get excited about. Through my years of just helping people, I've noticed the following insights leveraging my skill of coaching:

1 — Coaching doesn't depend on life experience in your niche — it's a proven question framework. I get so frustrated that people think you need 30+ years of life lived before you can become a coach. Not true. You need the skill and heart of a coach, that's it.

2 — Coaching isn't just for sports — it's applicable in any field. With the skill of coaching, you can help any person identify their pain, reveal insights about themselves, and make a plan to breakthrough that specific pain point.

3 — Coaching is its own category. Coaching is not mentoring (walking with someone like a parent), consulting (giving recommendations from your years of experience), or therapy (analyzing the past, diagnosis, and prescriptions). Coaching is building the insights and plan to happen in the future. It builds off the work done in mentoring, consulting, and therapy — coaching is not and does not replace these different services.

4 — The best coach can work with any walk of life — from homeless to billionaire. The more reps (coaching sessions) you have under your belt, the more available and intuitive you become to coach anyone. When you are still developing your skill, "the riches are in the niches" as Alex Hormozi points out. Especially if your coaching muscle needs more working out until you can lift up any amount of weight (help any kind of person).

So what is the skill of coaching? A repeatable process you take people through that as a coach, you trust, have conviction for, and need zero prep to take someone through. This repeatable process is a bulletproof question framework you clarify over time that takes people through your stages of growth, clarity, insight, and breakthrough in each session.

Not everyone can coach. The traits required for coaching people are: patience, curiosity, joy, self-forgetfulness, humility, and conviction you know what you're doing.

As a freedom specialist, I use the coaching skill to great effect. It helps me stay bulletproof and as useful as possible in every interaction and client session.
